Red Sea Exploration Mission Completes 70,000 Kilometers of Surveys and Records 14 Scientific Discoveries

Saudi Arabia’s “Decade of Red Sea Exploration” project has completed more than 70,000 kilometers of marine surveys over five years, leading to 14 scientific discoveries that have significantly expanded knowledge of the Red Sea’s marine ecosystems.

According to the National Center for Wildlife, the project represents one of the Kingdom’s largest marine research initiatives, supporting biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Extensive Marine Surveys

Researchers carried out more than 70,000 kilometers of survey work along the Red Sea, collecting valuable scientific data on marine habitats and their natural components.

The information has strengthened scientific understanding of marine ecosystems while supporting wildlife conservation and sustainable marine resource management.

Fourteen Scientific Discoveries

The exploration mission resulted in 14 scientific discoveries, including blue holes, atoll coral reefs, and unique geological formations that highlight the exceptional biodiversity and geological richness of the Red Sea.

The findings are expected to support future marine research and environmental studies.

Advanced Deep-Sea Exploration

The project included 44 manned submarine dives reaching depths of up to 500 meters, along with 131 remotely operated vehicle missions that explored depths of up to 2,300 meters.

Researchers also reached a maximum depth of 2,752 meters, providing valuable insight into previously unexplored deep-sea environments.

More Than 135 Researchers

More than 135 researchers from various scientific disciplines participated in the initiative, contributing to a comprehensive scientific database that supports marine conservation and biodiversity protection.

The project reinforces Saudi Arabia’s growing role in advancing marine science and environmental sustainability through large-scale scientific exploration.
