NBAIS Defends Qualification, Says It's Equal to WAEC and NECO

The National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) runs an examination system focused on Arabic and Islamic education. It also includes core subjects like English, Mathematics, and Sciences. The board has existed since 1960 and became nationally recognised by the Federal Ministry of Education in 2011. Since 2017, it has operated as an independent body—just like WAEC and NECO.

Students from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds can take NBAIS exams. This makes it an inclusive option for learners who want both religious and general education.

Know how NBAIS compares to WAEC and NECO

The NBAIS certificate is not inferior to WAEC or NECO. According to Ustaz Abdul-Lateef Adekilekun, special assistant to the NBAIS registrar, the board’s certificate meets the same standard as other national examinations. It is approved by:

• The Federal Ministry of Education
• The National Universities Commission (NUC)

This means it should be accepted for admission into any tertiary institution in Nigeria.

Learn why many universities still reject NBAIS

Despite official approval, many universities—especially in southern Nigeria—do not fully accept NBAIS certificates. This happens mostly due to a lack of awareness. Many schools and admissions officers do not understand the history or legal standing of the NBAIS board.

This has made it harder for students from schools affiliated with NBAIS to get into universities, even though they meet the required qualifications.

Today, many universities in the northern part of Nigeria already accept NBAIS results for admission. These include:

• Public universities in Kano, Kaduna, and other northern states
• Some federal universities that follow NUC guidelines

In total, 26 states have students who sit for the NBAIS exams, and over 1,200 schools across Nigeria are affiliated with the board.

NBAIS has asked the federal government to set up a nationwide campaign. This would raise awareness among universities and the general public about the value and legality of its certificate.
