A man has been left in a "critical condition" after being shot by police in a quiet street in Surrey.

Officers had descended on Nursery Road in Knaphill, Woking, just after midnight on Sunday after receiving reports of an "armed altercation" in the street.

Surrey Police confirmed that a man in his 20s, who has since been taken to hospital, was shot by armed police at the scene.

In a statement released just before midday, the force confirmed that one of the two people involved in the street fight was a "man armed with a weapon" - and added that officers had seized said weapon.

Police also detailed that the pair were known to each other, and said there is no risk to the wider public following the incident.

In light of the shooting, the force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) - a necessity due to the man's serious injury "following the contact with the police", according to the body.

Surrey Police confirmed it would be supporting the mandatory IOPC investigation.

Nursery Road, a leafy street which runs a ring around a tree-lined square, has been partially cordoned off, Surrey Police said.

MORE FROM SURREY AND THE SOUTH EAST:

The force outlined that the leafy residential road is "partially closed with limited foot and vehicle access to residents", and have urged the public to stay away "for the time being".

A Surrey Police statement added: "We appreciate the localised disruption this will cause and would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience while our enquiries are underway."
