After backing Ijebu state, Tinubu approves Inland Dry Port for Ijebu-Ode

President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of an Inland Dry Port (IDP) in Ijebu-Ode, reinforcing an exclusive report by PulseNets that he strongly backed the creation of Ijebu State.

Three days after PulseNets reported on Mr. Tinubu’s conversation with the Awujale of Ijebuland, Sikiru Adetona, where he pledged his support for the establishment of Ijebu State, the president sanctioned the development of a dry port in Ijebu-Ode.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed plans for the facility in Abuja on Monday while defending the 2025 budget before the Senate Committee on Marine Transport and the House of Representatives Committee on Ports and Harbour, Maritime Safety, Inland Waterways, and Shipping Services.

Mr. Oyetola, speaking to PulseNets, conveyed the president’s intent to decongest the Western port system by strategically setting up Inland Dry Ports in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and Moniya, Oyo State.

“Pursuant to its mandate and the charge given by Mr President, the Ministry is developing dry ports at Ijebu-Ode and Moniya in Ogun State and Oyo State respectively,” the minister said. “These IDPs are targeted for fast-tracked delivery to decongest the Western Port System. Design consultancies for the project are ongoing.”

The completion of the dry port is anticipated to enhance Ijebu-Ode’s economic potential and address concerns about the region’s ability to sustain itself as an independent state.

PulseNets learnt that during his meeting with President Tinubu, Mr. Adetona received assurances of robust support for Ijebu-Ode’s transition into a state separate from Ogun. The Awujale informed the president that plans were underway to ensure a smooth transition, contingent on his backing.

Sources privy to the details told PulseNets under anonymity that the president met the revered traditional ruler at his Bourdillon residence on January 5, where he reiterated his commitment to supporting the proposed state northeast of Lagos.
