News Alert: Significant Developments in Kano as Assembly Removes Five Emirs and Dissolves Emirate Councils

The dissolution of all five emirate councils in Kano State by the Kano State House of Assembly signifies the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s exclusive authority to appoint new Emirs.

The decision followed extensive discussions during the plenary session on Thursday.

The Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill underwent deliberations and successfully passed its second and third readings on Thursday morning.

Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, emphasized that repealing the law aimed at restoring Kano’s former eminence, highlighting how the division of the Kano Emirate into five emirates diminished the state’s prestige nationally.

Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala underscored the emirate council’s role as a guardian of culture, which was compromised by the establishment of additional emirates.

In remarks to reporters, Dala clarified that the amendment effectively abolished all five emirate councils, with the oversight responsibility transitioning to the Commissioner for Local Governments.

The assembly also passed a resolution to establish a new second-class emirate council within the state.
