Newborn twins discovered alive after being abandoned in the bush by their mother

A pair of newborn twins, a boy and a girl, were rescued on April 25, 2026, after being abandoned in a bushy area within the Vandeikya Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State. The infants were discovered by the LGA Task Force during a routine sanitation exercise.

The mother, who remains unidentified, dumped the infants at a “bushy slope” in the Mbaaji district of Ningev Council Ward. The location is known in the local Tiv dialect as “Wangbeen Jor.”

Chief Daniel Orhembega, Chairman of the Task Force, confirmed that his team encountered the babies while traveling to dispose of refuse. According to Orhembega, an agent heard a baby crying, leading the team to investigate the sound.

Upon reaching the site, the agents found the newborns,They were “wrapped in freshly plucked leaves.”

The “placenta and a gown” believed to belong to the mother were found at the scene.

One infant was crying while the other was “deeply asleep” at the time of discovery.

The twins were immediately handed over to medical personnel for urgent care. They have since been placed under the supervision of the Vandeikya Local Government Welfare Department.

The Local Government Chairman has issued an appeal to the public, requesting “any useful information that can lead to disclosure” of the mother’s identity.
