Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence across Nigeria, stating that both Christians and Muslims are being “slaughtered” in several parts of the country.

Speaking to journalists after returning to the Vatican, the Pope linked the ongoing crisis to a troubling mix of terrorism, economic hardship, and decades-long land and resource disputes.

“There’s a question of terrorism. There’s a question that has to do a lot with economics, if you will, and control of the lands that they have.”

The pontiff stressed the urgent need for the Nigerian government to protect religious freedom for all, regardless of their beliefs.

“Unfortunately, many Christians have died, and I think it’s very important to seek a way for the government, with all peoples, to promote authentic religious freedom,” he added.

Pope Leo XIV’s comments followed a press inquiry about the safety of Christians in Nigeria, prompting him to clarify that the violence is not confined to one religion but affects “both Christians and Muslims.”

Church leaders in Nigeria have welcomed the Pope’s remarks, describing them as a timely and courageous condemnation of the ongoing atrocities and a gesture of solidarity with victims across the nation.

As attacks continue to claim lives in several states, the Pope’s message serves as a crucial reminder of the need for unity, dialogue, and stronger protections for religious freedom and human life across Nigeria.
