Moses Kuria Warns of 2027 Election Rigging Plot as By-Election Violence Escalates

Former Trade Cabinet Secretary and presidential adviser Moses Kuria has sounded an alarm over rising incidents of election-related violence ahead of Thursday’s by-elections, warning that the clashes offer a troubling preview of what might unfold in the 2027 General Election.

Kuria claims that a secret plot is underway to rig the 2027 polls, but he maintains that Kenyans will not permit President William Ruto’s UDA party or any other political entity to remain in office through fraudulent means. He emphasized that Kenyans have become increasingly politically intelligent and less forgiving of electoral fraud.

He further observed that the international community is closely monitoring Kenya as the country prepares for the next major election. Kuria called on the IEBC to take firm action against politicians and their supporters who breach campaign regulations.

“I want to tell the government: the international community is watching. How we conduct these elections is of interest to the international community,” Kuria said.

The outspoken former CS also cited the recent events in Tanzania, where several people were reportedly killed in a lopsided election that handed President Samia Suluhu Hassan a 98 percent victory. Kuria told opposition supporters that such results would spark unrest in Kenya.

“You think whatever happened in Tanzania will be replicated here? Kenyans are not Tanzanians. Don’t try it here. It will not be business as usual in Kenya. It won’t be business as usual if you try that monkey business here. Kenyans’ level of tolerance for nonsense is at its lowest. Any plot to rig elections can’t work here,” he told journalists on Saturday night during an interview in Embu.

Kuria has been on the campaign trail supporting Ireri Mbui, the Chama Cha Kazi candidate vying for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat. He says he was among the first leaders to raise concerns about looming violence after a viral video captured youths warning DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua against stepping foot in Mbeere North.

On Sunday evening, Kuria also highlighted fresh violence in Narok and Chwele, in Kabuchai constituency, Bungoma County, where suspected hired goons allegedly attacked Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya as he campaigned for an opposition-backed candidate in a ward by-election.

Kuria asserted that government intimidation has failed before, recalling how opposition candidates triumphed in Juja and Kiambaa during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term.

“How did UDA come into power? There were those by-elections in Juja and then Kiambaa, and we supported UDA against the government… They threatened to rig it, but that never happened.”

CCK’s Mbui faces DP’s Newton Karish, backed by the joint Opposition, while UDA candidate Leo Wamuthende enjoys robust government support from Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Public Service CS Godfrey Ruku, and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, among other senior officials.
