Military officers in Guinea-Bissau announced on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, that they had taken “total control” of the country, suspending all state institutions and the recently concluded electoral process, just three days after the nation held legislative and presidential elections.

AFP journalists at the scene reported hearing gunfire near the presidential palace earlier in the day, as uniformed soldiers took control of the main road leading to the building.

In a statement read at army headquarters in the capital, Bissau, the military confirmed that President Umaro Sissoco Embalo had been deposed and that all state institutions would remain suspended until further notice. The officers also announced the closure of all national borders.

The announcement comes amid contested elections, with both leading candidates claiming victory. Guinea-Bissau, one of West Africa’s poorest nations, has a history of political instability and coup attempts, raising concerns among regional and international observers about the country’s return to military rule.

A group of military officers claim they have seized control amid reports that President Embaló has been arrested. Shortly after gunshots were heard in the capital, government sources told the BBC that Embaló had been detained. The developments follow a presidential election in which the main opposition candidate was disqualified. Election results were expected on Thursday, with both Embaló and his closest rival, Fernando Dias, claiming victory. Witnesses in Bissau reported hearing gunfire around 13:00 GMT, prompting hundreds of people on foot and in vehicles to flee and seek shelter. Guinea-Bissau, with a population just under two million, has experienced nine coups or attempted coups since 1980, including two attempts to overthrow Embaló, the latest in December 2023.
