Kenya Moja Alliance Gears Up for First Post-Raila Event in Kisii

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is set to lead the Kenya Moja caucus to its first major public event since the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga last month. The gathering marks a significant moment for the youthful political alliance as it seeks to consolidate its national presence and redefine opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Kenya Moja Alliance will meet on Friday at the Magena Primary School grounds in Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, Kisii County. Host MP Obadiah Barongo announced that the leaders will hold a community forum dubbed “Kikao na Wajane” (Meeting Widows) starting at 11 am, where they plan to support widows through a well-organized fundraiser.

“Friday, before the Sabbath begins….Kisii county,” Sifuna confirmed on his Facebook page, posting an event flyer as he affirmed his attendance.

Sifuna will join Barongo and a strong delegation of legislators, including Senator Richard Onyonka and MPs Babu Owino (Embakasi East -ODM), Caleb Amisi (Sabaoti-ODM), Joshua Kimilu (Kaiti-Wiper), and Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South-ODM). The event has also attracted leaders across the political spectrum, such as Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri-UDA), Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba-ODM), Jack Omboka (Bumula-DAP-K), Majimbo Kalasinga (Kabuchai-Ford Kenya), Ojiambo Oundo (Funyula-ODM), Patrick Makau (Mavoko-Wiper), and Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni.

Despite representing different political parties, many of these leaders remain aligned with the united opposition movement seeking to block President William Ruto from securing a second term.

“We are going to meet one of the most vulnerable groups in our society who need genuine support from the community,” Kibagendi said.

Sifuna and Babu have emerged as influential figures within the Orange Movement, consistently rejecting calls to support Ruto’s re-election under the broad-based unity push. Although Sifuna has not endorsed a presidential hopeful, he has publicly ruled out supporting Ruto. Babu, meanwhile, has previously backed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Senators Onyonka and Omogeni, together with MPs Kibagendi, Gisairo, and Wamuchomba, continue to align themselves with former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i’s political faction, while Makau and Kimilu maintain their support for Kalonzo.

As the opposition strategizes for 2027, many leaders hope to unite behind a single candidate in a move reminiscent of the 2002 coalition that toppled the ruling regime. However, Sifuna’s allies appear to be crafting a new political pathway aimed at accommodating leaders outside both UDA and the broader opposition coalition.

“We’re not a third force, we are the force. This government lacked proper checks and balances, and we’ve stepped in to fill that gap,” Babu declared.

Amisi echoed this, framing Kenya Moja as a movement driving generational change.

“This is a generational struggle just like we transitioned from colonialism to African rule, or from apartheid to black leadership. Change is knocking.”
