A suspected hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship has triggered global monitoring after deaths and emergency evacuations.

CAPE VERDE: A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard a Dutch-flagged cruise ship has drawn international attention after multiple passengers fell seriously ill during a voyage across the Atlantic. Health agencies in Europe and Africa are now coordinating emergency response measures as the vessel heads towards Spain’s Canary Islands for further medical checks.

The hantavirus outbreak first gained attention after reports confirmed three deaths and several suspected infections among passengers and crew aboard the MV Hondius. According to the World Health Organization, seven cases have now been identified, including two laboratory-confirmed infections and five suspected cases. Authorities said one patient remains in critical condition while others are being monitored closely.

Officials believe the virus strain involved may be the Andes variant, a rare form known for possible human-to-human transmission in close-contact settings. Most hantavirus infections are usually linked to rodents and contaminated droppings rather than direct spread between people. Experts stressed that the overall public health risk remains low despite heightened global attention surrounding the hantavirus outbreak.

Cape Verde initially refused docking access to the ship while medical teams assessed the situation offshore. Spanish authorities later approved plans for the vessel to continue towards the Canary Islands, where passengers and crew are expected to undergo further screening and possible evacuation procedures. Several countries, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany, are also assisting with repatriation efforts.

Doctors say symptoms linked to hantavirus can include fever, fatigue, breathing difficulties and severe respiratory complications. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment, although supportive medical care improves survival chances. The WHO continues to investigate how the hantavirus outbreak began and whether any transmission occurred during the voyage itself.
