The House of Representatives has made a decision to provide N648 million in support of the Federal Government for a period of six months through a reduction of their salaries by 50%, aiming to enhance food security nationwide and tackle the issue of high food prices.

This action was taken following the approval of a modification to the motion’s request proposed by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, emphasizing the necessity for legislators to contribute 50% of their N600,000 monthly earnings to assist the Nigerian population in light of prevailing economic difficulties.

The adjusted request by Kalu was in response to a motion introduced by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State, urging advocates of the planned nationwide demonstrations to reconsider their approach and opt for dialogue with the government.

Expressing the intent behind the salary reduction, the Deputy Speaker highlighted that the funds would be directed towards supporting the government’s initiatives aimed at alleviating the increasing food costs in the country and easing the hardships experienced by Nigerians.

In addition to the aforementioned decision, the legislators appealed to the Nigerian populace to demonstrate patience towards President Ahmed Tinubu‘s administration as they work towards resolving the various challenges and adversities facing the citizens.

The motion was endorsed and directed to the relevant committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for further actions to ensure compliance.
