Grimsby fined for fielding ineligible player in Carabao Cup win over Man United

Grimsby Town have been fined for fielding an ineligible player in their shock Carabao Cup second-round victory over Manchester United.

The League Two side stunned United 12-11 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in 80 minutes, booking a third-round clash with Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

However, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed on Tuesday that Grimsby will pay a £20,000 fine—half of which is suspended until the end of the 2025/26 season—for breaching competition rules.

Crucially, there is no suggestion that the Mariners’ famous win will be overturned.

According to the EFL statement, Grimsby “self-reported the breach upon discovery the day after the fixture had been completed.”
