FG increases passport fee by 100% effective from Sep 1

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a 100% increase in the fees for the Nigerian Standard Passport. Effective from 1st September 2025, the 32-page document with 5-year validity, which previously cost N50,000, has been increased to N100,000. Also, the 64-page with 10-year validity was set at N200,000 from N100,000.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), signed by its Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the upward review is meant to improve the quality and standard of its services. The agency noted that the price adjustment only affects passport applications made in Nigeria.

In a bid to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service hereby announces an upward review of Nigerian Standard Passport fees, set to take effect on 1st September, 2025,” the statement reads.

The development comes barely a year after the recent price review. Recall that exactly a year ago, the federal government increased the price of a 32-page passport with 5 years of validity by 42% from N35,000 to N50,000. The price for a 64-page passport with 10 years of validity was increased by 33% from N75,000 to N100,000.

While the fee for Nigerians at home saw a 100% upward review, the cost for Nigerians in the diaspora remains the same.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Passport Application fees made by Nigerians in diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page with 5-year validity and $230 for a 64-page with 10-year validity,” it explained.

Aside from the increase in service delivery and quality, the Immigration Service did not state other reasons for the review. However, this review comes at a time when Nigerians are battling to keep up their purchasing power. Also, the price adjustment will receive a mixed reaction from Nigerians, considering the quantity of the agency’s in the last two years under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Immigration Service explained that it would continue to keep up with quality service delivery towards passport production. “The Service reiterates its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure services are accessible to all Nigerians,” part of the statement reads.

State of passport production in Nigeria

The situation surrounding passport application and production under the President Bola Tinubu administration has received significant commendations from the public. The Immigration Service has implemented a strategic digital solution that saw a modernised application portal and clearance of backlogs and debts.

On May 27, 2025, the Minister revealed that his ministry has cleared over 200,000 unprocessed passport applications since he assumed office. He explained that the ministry is using innovation, technology, and planning to clear backlogs and debts.

The ministry has also introduced initiatives such as e-visa platforms, contactless renewals for Nigerians abroad, and advanced passenger tracking have been launched. Through these projects, Tunji-Ojo revealed that ₦28 billion in old debts have been paid off, all without extra funding from the government.

The face of the Nigerian Passport at the global index also made positive changes. In the Henley Passport Index for July 2025, the Nigerian passport ranked 88th globally, marking a significant improvement from its earlier average 95th position in 2024 and 97th position in 2023.

The recent ranking also placed Nigeria alongside Ethiopia and Myanmar in the rankings, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 45 destinations. South Africa, placed 45th, remains the best-ranked in Africa. However, the ranking still placed Nigeria among the weakest in Africa.
