Ben Shelton stuns vomiting Carlos Alcaraz in historic US Open epic that ends at 3:35 a.m.

The US Open has truly come alive.

Ben Shelton pulled off an epic 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) comeback victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz — who was spotted vomiting during the game — in their US Open quarterfinal clash.

The pair broke the record for the latest finish ever at the tournament in Flushing Meadows, New York, with the contest eventually coming to an end at 3:35 a.m local time.

This surpassed the previous record held by Alcaraz when he faced Jannik Sinner in the 2022 quarterfinal which finished at 2:50 a.m.

The match lasted 4 hours and 28 minutes in total.

The Spaniard won the opening set 7-6 (7-5) in his first tournament since sustaining a wrist injury that has kept him out of action since April.

But Florida native Shelton would claim the next two sets in emphatic fashion, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Alcaraz forced a deciding set when he prevailed 6-1, and showcased his extreme efforts when he was picked up by the broadcast cameras vomiting into his towel.

The final set ultimately went the distance with the seven-time major winning overcoming Alcaraz in a 7-6 (10-7) thriller.

This marks the first win that the 23-year-old has claimed over the current world No. 3, having lost their previous three encounters, and arguably the biggest win of his career to date.

There is now guaranteed to be an American in the final with Shelton next set to take on Frances Tiafoe in the semi-final after he defeated Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6).
