“All Courts Shut Down” — JUSUN Kaduna Embarks On Indefinite Strike Over Financial Autonomy, Arrears

Courts across Kaduna State were shut down on Monday as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) commenced an indefinite strike to press for the implementation of financial autonomy and the settlement of outstanding entitlements.

The industrial action crippled operations at the Federal and State High Courts, Upper Shari’a Courts, as well as Customary and Magistrates’ Courts, all of which were locked with banners reading, “JUSUN Kaduna State Chapter Embarks on Strike.”

At the Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, courtrooms remained closed, though a few staff members were seen outside assisting individuals seeking affidavits.

The strike follows a notice issued on October 23, signed by JUSUN Secretary Nasiru Haruna, in which the union accused the Kaduna State government of ignoring multiple correspondences, including a demand letter dated September 1 and an ultimatum letter dated October 9, 2025.

According to JUSUN, repeated appeals for dialogue were met with silence, leaving members with no option but to withdraw their services indefinitely.

Key demands of the union include the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), consequential salary adjustments, and payment of withheld salaries for April and May 2021.

Other demands include the payment of nine years’ arrears of a 20 percent salary component from 2016 to date, settlement of leave and transport grant arrears spanning nine years, and payment of outfit allowances for judiciary staff.

JUSUN stated that the decision to strike was reached during an emergency meeting on October 13, warning that the action would continue until all demands were met.

“An indefinite strike action shall begin on Monday. All activities of the Kaduna State judiciary shall be shut down. All staff are to withdraw their services until further notice,” the union declared.

The strike is expected to stall judicial proceedings across Kaduna State, affecting both civil and criminal cases until the government addresses the union’s grievances.
