Traders operating in Kikuyu town have expressed optimism in the construction of modern market stalls currently ongoing around the recently renovated Kikuyu bus park. This step is part of the broader Kiambu County Government’s initiative to upgrade infrastructure and hence improve the livelihoods of traders in the region.

“I am happy the county is providing modern spaces for our business and hope that security will be improved, especially with the newly installed lights.” Grace Gichuki, a food vendor in Kikuyu town said.

Initiated few weeks ago, the new stalls and kiosks are envisioned to benefit local market traders by enabling them to expand their small businesses while providing a more formal and organized place to operate, replacing the older, more informal market structures. Some of the renovation plan includes excavation, graveling, compaction, cabro stone laying, public restrooms, and designated trash areas.

After completion, these stalls will be allocated to existing traders for free, complementing the recent instalation of solar-powered streetlights and shades within the bus park itself. According to the county leadership, this project will create a more dignified and productive working environment for the traders in Kikuyu.

“We are constructing more modern kiosks around the bus park that will be allocated to existing traders for free.” Kiambu County Governor Wamatangi said.

In August 2025, it was reported that the construction of these business stalls around the ‘Kikuyu New Stage’ area was taking good shape. By September 2025, posts on Kikuyu Municipality’s social media handles indicates that the stalls at bus park are still in progress, with initial stages like construction of the concrete foundation having already been handled.

In early September 2025, a delegation from Embu County, including Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), visited Kiambu County on a benchmarking tour. As part of this visit, they toured the Kikuyu bus park site, which is currently under final stages of construction to provide more efficient transport services for residents.

As such, being part of this larger infrastructure upgrade of the bus park, the building of these kiosks at the market is therefore expected to improve the livelihoods of traders in many ways. While specific completion dates are not provided, the project is expected to impact over 100 traders in this region, increasing their daily earnings.

The project falls under the Kiambu County Annual Development Plan, which aims for completion within a single financial year. Other similar projects are happening concurrently in various locations within Kiambu County, including Githunguri and Karuri.

Need for change

The fast-growing number of people and urbanisation in Kiambu County, especially in Kikuyu ward, is putting a lot of pressure on the roads and transportation system. This has led to crowded streets, disorderly transport services and dangers for everyone using the roads.

This is why, to address such challenges, the Department of Roads, Transport, Public Works and Utilities is undertaking these initiatives; includes the construction of 7 bus parks across Kiambu county, Kikuyu bus park being one of them, as well as the rehabilitation of hundreds of kilometres of roads, complete with walkways and storm water drains.

As part of several bus parks being constructed or rehabilitated in Kiambu County by the county government to address challenges posed by rapid urbanization, these modern stalls are envisioned to improve the overall market experience in Kikuyu town. Progress updates indicate that upgrading to cabro construction is currently ongoing.

“The bus park has a capacity of over 110 vehicles and over 100 kiosks are being built around it, which are to be allocated to existing traders for free.” Elfas Muiruri, a resident of Kikuyu confirmed.
