The Super Eagles secured a memorable 4–2 penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt to claim third place at Africa’s premier football tournament, as fans gathered for the MTN Nigeria watch party at Cubana on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the standout performer of the night, executing crucial saves against Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in the shoot-out to swing momentum Nigeria’s way.

In front of the goal, Ademola Lookman delivered the decisive penalty to secure the bronze medal for the Super Eagles, extending Nigeria’s unbroken run in third-place shoot-outs.  Meanwhile, Akor Adams, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi also converted their spot kicks with the team’s collective nerve under pressure.

Fans at Cubana analysed every phase of play, noting Nigeria’s persistent threat in wide areas and the importance of defensive organisation as the match remained goalless through regular time.

“The tension in the room was unbelievable, but Nwabali proved he is a wall today,” said Chidi Okafor, a long-time supporter at the watch party. “Beating a team like Egypt on penalties shows we have the mental strength to compete with the best.’’

The victory marks a high note for Nigeria, showcasing that the team can dominate the next tournament in 2028.
