Show Nigerians the Gains of the Acclaimed Rising Revenues – Obi Tells Tinubu

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that the reported revenue gains being celebrated by the administration translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Obi, in a statement posted on social media, questioned the value of the government’s claim that meeting its 2025 revenue target by August this year has on the country.

He congratulated the president on the achievement but stressed that Nigerians must feel the impact beyond figures announced at press briefings.

According to him, true economic stability cannot be measured merely by revenue milestones but by improvements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and poverty reduction. He said critical projects remain underfunded, contractors are still being owed, and public institutions such as schools and hospitals are in deplorable condition.

“For the next four months, every value of our excess revenue should be deliberately channelled into health, education, and pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said. “This must be done transparently, with verifiable and measurable outcomes. Anything less will mean that revenue growth has not translated into national growth.”

President Tinubu had on Tuesday announced that Nigeria had already met its 2025 revenue target as of August, effectively ending the nation’s reliance on borrowing to finance the budget. Speaking at a meeting with The Buhari Organisation in Abuja, the president said the government would now focus on building infrastructure to support trade, job creation, and economic expansion.

“We have met our revenue target. Nigeria is not borrowing again. Nobody is trading pieces of paper for exchange rate anymore. The naira is stabilising. What we need now is to build the infrastructure for export and import, to create jobs and opportunities for our people. That is my guarantee,” Tinubu had declared.
