Bandits on Sunday blocked a rural road in Giwa local government area of Kaduna state, killing one person and robbing several travellers.

Residents said the attack happened along the Iyatawa–Ringim road, which links Birnin Gwari in Kaduna to Sabuwa in Katsina.

The assailants were said to have mounted a blockade, dispossessing commuters of motorcycles, cash and valuables while firing shots to scare them.

“During the shooting, my relative, Haruna Sadau, was killed, and another person, Abbas Mohammed, was injured and rushed to the hospital,” a trader whose relative was attacked told SaharaReporters via WhatsApp.

The incident comes amid the Kaduna government’s launch of the “Kaduna model”, a peace initiative designed in collaboration with federal agencies to address insecurity in the state.

The deal involved negotiations with notorious bandit leaders such as Yellow Jambros and Dogo Gide, both accused of killings, kidnappings and extortion across Kaduna and neighbouring states.

Under the arrangement, some 200 fighters reportedly surrendered their weapons, with a number enrolling in government rehabilitation programmes.
