President William Ruto left for Washington, DC, last evening after receiving an official invitation from US President Donald Trump to witness the historic signing of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)–Rwanda Peace Agreement.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the agreement builds on the progress made through the Nairobi and Luanda Peace Processes, as well as the joint EAC–SADC efforts that have pushed for long-term stability between the two nations.

As the current East African Community (EAC) chairperson, President Ruto has consistently urged the parties involved in the conflict to embrace dialogue and commit to a political solution.

Ruto to Advance Kenya’s Strategic Agenda in Washington

During the trip, President Ruto will hold several engagements focused on strengthening Kenya’s strategic interests in trade, investment, health cooperation, and regional security.

One of the key highlights of his visit will be witnessing the signing of the Kenya–US Health Cooperation Framework, a landmark pact that will anchor a 25-year partnership aimed at accelerating Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya.

Ruto is also expected to outline his administration’s vision of transitioning Kenya into a first-world economy, with emphasis on expanding infrastructure, growing human capital, strengthening agriculture, and unlocking new investment opportunities.

The President will also pursue additional Public–Private Partnership (PPP) investments to support Kenya’s long-term development projects.

Major Breakthrough in DRC–Rwanda Conflict

The peace agreement represents one of the most significant breakthroughs in addressing decades of instability in eastern DRC.

The M23 rebel group, a movement dominated by ethnic Tutsis, has battled the DRC government for years, with its roots tracing back to the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The group resurfaced in 2021, with Kinshasa accusing Rwanda of backing the rebels. Kigali has consistently denied the claims, saying its actions are driven by self-defense concerns.

With the conflict intensifying, the United States stepped in to mediate. President Trump has repeatedly credited his administration for facilitating the critical steps that led to the ceasefire between Rwanda and the DRC.

Ruto’s presence at the signing ceremony underscores Kenya’s growing diplomatic role in regional peace efforts and its commitment to promoting stability across the continent.
