Rodrygo ruptures ACL, Set to miss World Cup

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is expected to be sidelined for up to seven months after suffering a serious knee injury involving both his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus.

The Brazilian had only just returned from a month out with tendonitis when he featured in Monday night’s clash against Getafe. Shortly after coming off the bench, the 23-year-old slipped near the edge of the Santiago Bernabéu pitch and immediately clutched his right knee in visible discomfort.

Medical examinations conducted on Tuesday confirmed the severity of the injury, delivering a major setback to both the player and the club.

In an official statement, Real Madrid said: “Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and a rupture of the lateral meniscus in his right leg.”

The diagnosis means Rodrygo is likely to miss the remainder of the season and faces a lengthy rehabilitation period. The injury also rules him out of representing Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, dealing a significant blow to the national team’s attacking options.

For Real Madrid, the timing could hardly be worse. Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa is already dealing with attacking shortages following Kylian Mbappé’s recent knee sprain sustained in training. Rodrygo’s absence further limits the club’s forward options, leaving Vinícius Júnior, Gonzalo García and Franco Mastantuono as the only recognised fit attackers currently available.

The Brazilian now begins a long recovery process, with surgery and rehabilitation expected to keep him out for the better part of the year.
