Rivers Police Announce 12-Hour Movement Ban For LG Elections

The Rivers State Police Command has announced a temporary restriction on human and vehicular movement across the state on Saturday.

The move comes ahead of the local government elections scheduled for the same day.

The restriction will be in effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., as part of measures to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.

In a statement on Thursday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, urged residents to “cooperate fully with security agencies to ensure a smooth, peaceful, and hitch-free electoral process.”

She added that “the Police are committed to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the elections.”

She further stated, “Comprehensive security measures have been put in place, including the adequate deployment of security operatives to all the land and waterways to guarantee a secure environment for voters.”

Iringe-Koko also stressed, “Any person found violating the movement restrictions will be dealt with according to the law.

“We want every Rivers resident to exercise their right to vote in a safe environment.”

She added, “Parents and guardians should ensure that children and vulnerable persons remain indoors during the restriction hours to avoid unnecessary risks.”

The police command further advised, “Residents should report all suspicious activities to the security agencies immediately. Public cooperation is key to ensuring that the elections are free, fair, and credible.”

Authorities emphasised that compliance with the restriction order is mandatory and encouraged residents to plan their movements ahead of time.

Iringe-Koko added, “Security personnel have been briefed to prioritize humanitarian considerations and assist those with emergencies, but overall compliance is essential for a hitch-free election.”
