Every year, millions of tonnes of food go to waste in Africa – not because it’s bad, but because it can’t be stored long enough. Farmers grow crops with care, only to see them spoil before they reach the market. This is the problem that Moses Afopezi, a young innovator from Cameroon, set out to solve. And with the support of the PachiPanda Challenge, his solution, AgricFresh, is now transforming agriculture and communities.

AgricFresh’s Story

Moses founded AgricFresh to tackle one of Africa’s biggest agricultural headaches: post-harvest losses. His idea was simple but powerful: use solar-powered cold storage units to keep produce fresh, then connect farmers directly to buyers through a digital platform.

This innovation means farmers can store their harvests for longer without spoilage. They can earn more income because crops no longer rot before reaching buyers. With this, farmers would also be able to reduce waste, increase food availability, and improve community nutrition.

When Moses entered the PachiPanda Challenge, he was one of more than 180 applicants in Cameroon. Eleven finalists were selected. His solution stood out for being scalable, climate-friendly, and impactful. AgricFresh eventually won top honours at the Africa-wide finals, proving that grassroots ideas can compete – and win – in big stages.

The Ripple Effect

The AgricFresh solution has done more than reduce waste. It has helped farmers negotiate better prices since they are not desperate to sell quickly. This solution introduced renewable energy technology (solar) into farming communities. It boosted food security by making produce last longer in markets and households.
