Kenya’s Masai Mara, Amboseli and Lake Naivasha are now doubling as the African backdrop for the biggest Indian production ever mounted on the continent, with global star Priyanka Chopra Jonas leading the on-screen bill while RRR director S. S. Rajamouli calls the shots.

Chopra, whose combined Instagram and Twitter following exceeds 110 million, has been sharing stills and short clips from her luxury tented camp since arriving for the shoot, instantly putting Kenya’s savannahs in front of a worldwide audience.

Rajamouli, whose last two films (Baahubali and RRR) re-defined the scale of Indian cinema, has publicly described the still-untitled adventure as “an Indian ‘Indiana Jones’ or ‘James Bond’ that will race across five continents , .

Why Kenya won the role

After scouting Uganda and Tanzania, Rajamouli’s 120-member filming unit settled on Kenya for roughly 95 percent of the film’s African sequences.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who hosted the director in Nairobi on Tuesday, said the decision secures “a landmark moment that showcases Kenya’s beauty’.

“From the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara to the scenic Naivasha, the rugged Samburu, and the iconic Amboseli, Kenya’s landscapes are now etched into what is set to become the largest film production in Asia. Scheduled for release in over 120 countries, the movie is expected to reach more than a billion viewers worldwide.”

Kenya this past fortnight became the stage for one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, @ssrajamouli, the visionary Indian director, screenwriter, and storyteller whose works have captured the imagination of audiences across continents.

The production is expected to spend millions locally, making it one of the largest single-location investments by a foreign film crew, and will employ dozens of Kenyan drivers, guides, fixers and wildlife rangers etc. during the six-week schedule , .

For Kenyan viewers more familiar with Chopra from Quantico, The Matrix Resurrections and Citadel, her role opposite Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu marks her first South-Indian project since 2008’s Thamizhan.

Analysts note that her presence guarantees the film day-one traction in North America, Europe and India, markets where Kenya is actively courting high-value tourists.

Release plans

Rajamouli has locked a March 2027 worldwide release across more than 120 countries, eclipsing the previous Indian record of 100 set by Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.

With Kenya’s 30 percent filming rebate now in effect, tourism and film officials hope the exposure from Chopra’s social feeds, and the eventual big-screen vistas, will cement the country as the go-to destination for major Indian productions.
