The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has arrested a 34-year-old man, Akinola Tosin, for allegedly defrauding a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator through the use of a fake bank transfer alert while posing as a member of the Nigerian Army.

The Command's Public Relations Officer, ASC I Ayoola Michael, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, June 8, 2026, noting that the suspect was apprehended following a complaint lodged by a POS operator in the state.

According to the statement, Tosin allegedly obtained ₦40,600 from the operator after presenting a fake debit alert as proof of payment, deceiving the victim into believing that a successful bank transfer had been made.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect collected the sum of Forty Thousand Six Hundred Naira (₦40,600) after presenting a fake debit alert to the POS operator, deceiving the victim into believing a successful transfer had been made,” the statement read.

Further investigations uncovered that the suspect had allegedly been impersonating a Nigerian Army personnel using a fake military identity card bearing his name. He was also found in possession of military-related items reportedly used to gain the trust of unsuspecting members of the public and facilitate fraudulent activities.

The NSCDC said the suspect confessed to carrying out similar fraudulent acts against multiple victims. Investigators also identified an alleged accomplice, Feranmi Idoko Godwin, who is currently on the run.

“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and conclude investigations,” the statement added.

Items recovered from the suspect include two Opay ATM cards, two UBA ATM cards, two First Bank ATM cards, one PalmPay ATM card, and a National Identity Card.

The Corps stated that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon the conclusion of investigations.





Reacting to the development, the NSCDC Kwara State Commandant, Commandant Abbas Ndah Mohammed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to tackling crime and criminality across the state. He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and always verify electronic transactions before releasing cash, goods, or other valuables.

The command reiterated its resolve to continue safeguarding residents against fraud and other criminal activities.
