One for Jesus: Church leaders gather to explore the changing face of evangelism

As the Singapore Church continues to talk about church renewal and discipleship, more pastors and ministry leaders are sensing a renewed urgency to reach those who do not yet know Christ.

This was evident at the One for Jesus (OFJ) Pastors Share & Learn event on April 15, where more than 60 church leaders from various denominations came together to share new ways evangelism might look like today.

The annual event serves as a platform for churches to exchange ideas and resources. This year, the discussions reflected a broader shift toward embedding evangelism more deeply into the life of the Church.

Opportunities in everyday spaces

A key theme that emerged was the importance of rediscovering the mission field in daily life. As Colossians 3:23 put it: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord …”

Dr Stephen Chang, Medical Director of GLAD Clinic and an adjunct associate professor at the National University of Singapore, shared how he has come to view his medical practice not only as a place for physical healing, but also as an avenue for extending care and hope to patients.

For example, interacting with patients in the clinic has opened doors for him to have deeper conversations about faith.

It was a powerful reminder that the mission field is not somewhere we go, but where God has already placed us.

Building a culture of evangelism

Leaders also observed that evangelism is being increasingly expressed through everyday practices such as hospitality and relationship-building, rather than being confined to organised church events.

However, these events still have a place and can help to ignite a culture of evangelism in churches, some noted.

After Fairfield Methodist Church partnered OFJ for its Fan the Fire event (designed to inspire Christians to share the Gospel) in August 2025, its leaders noticed that its members had become more intentional about engaging their communities with the Gospel.

This reflected a larger question that many churches are already asking: How can we move from holding occasional outreach events to building an evangelistic culture that lasts?

Collaborating for greater impact

As more believers come together for their shared mission of evangelism, collaboration across ministry networks has also been growing, participants noted.

For example, those at the Marketplace Collective – comprising OFJ, Global Business Network (a not-for-profit marketplace ministry) and Digital Wesley (which uses technologies to advance the Gospel) – came together to start Kingdom Connect, a platform aimed at mobilising marketplace Christians for discipleship and outreach.

Groups to grow

Participants also discussed outreach efforts towards groups that might sometimes be overlooked.

For example, migrant domestic workers were identified as both a significant mission field and a potential channel for cross-border Gospel impact.

There was also renewed focus on engaging the Caleb Generation – our seniors, including retired pastors, missionaries and church workers – and encouraging them to continue participating in ministry.

A renewed sense of calling

Many leaders left the event feeling inspired by one another’s efforts to share the Gospel in various ways, and encouraged by how God is mobilising different parts of His body to further the Good News.

One participant said: “Thank you for organising this session with equipping resources for marketplace ministries, to reach the migrants and different generations for Christ.”

Participants left encouraged by the testimonies and re-inspired to equip their members for the work of evangelism.

Another shared: “I was highly encouraged hearing Dr Stephen Chang’s sharing about how he lives out his calling in the marketplace for the Gospel to be known. I was also inspired by New Life Church’s initiative to use their God-given space to welcome the domestic workers in the vicinity.”

With a renewed passion for evangelism, they returned to their congregations with greater clarity on how to equip their members to live out and share their faith wherever God has placed them.
