NUT Directs Oyo Teachers to Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Colleagues and Students

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to withdraw their services indefinitely beginning from Monday, June 1, 2026.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the State Secretary of the union, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, and addressed to elected state officers, SWEC members, headteachers, principals, and teachers in public schools across Oyo State.

According to the union, the industrial action follows a directive from the national leadership of the NUT in response to the continued detention of abducted teachers and students, whose rescue and safe release have yet to be secured.

The union noted that the prolonged captivity of the victims has created widespread fear and uncertainty among teachers, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and heightened tension in affected communities.

“The directive was given against the continued detention of our colleagues and learners by the abductors without any clear sign of their timely rescue and safe release,” the statement said.

The NUT explained that the withdrawal of services is intended to draw greater attention to the plight of the abducted victims and to compel government authorities to intensify efforts toward securing their immediate and unconditional release.

While urging teachers to fully comply with the directive, the union advised its members to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and safe in their respective homes throughout the period of the strike.

The union further reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, students, and their families, assuring them that lawful engagements with government and relevant stakeholders would continue until the victims regain their freedom.

The development is expected to disrupt academic activities in public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State as teachers await further directives from the national leadership of the union.

Comrade Salami reiterated the union’s commitment to the safety and welfare of teachers and learners, emphasizing that the protection of lives remains paramount.

“Solidarity forever,” the statement concluded.
