L-R Dr Olayiwola Awakan, Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), with Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)

The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have joined forces to revive dedicated tourism information desks at major airports across the country. This strategic move aims to unlock Nigeria’s vast tourism potential and enhance the country’s reputation as a world-class destination.

During a visit to FAAN headquarters in Lagos, NTDA Director-General Dr. Olayiwola Awakan emphasized the importance of airports as the first point of contact for international visitors. He stressed that tourism is about movement and FAAN plays a significant role in shaping visitors’ initial impressions of Nigeria.

Dr. Awakan described Nigeria as “sitting on a gold mine” of tourism opportunities, with cultural heritage, natural landscapes, eco-tourism, and adventure destinations waiting to be explored. He called for compelling storytelling, reliable data, and seamless travel experiences to reposition Nigeria as a top tourist destination.

The proposed tourism information desks will provide arriving passengers with immediate access to guides, maps, attraction highlights, and local travel options. This initiative is expected to create a more welcoming first impression for visitors and showcase Nigeria’s rich diversity.

FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku welcomed the partnership, describing aviation and tourism as “naturally interconnected”. She affirmed FAAN’s readiness to collaborate with NTDA to enhance passenger experience, upgrade airport infrastructure, and drive tourism growth.

A joint committee has been established to coordinate data sharing and oversee collaborative initiatives between NTDA and FAAN. This partnership is expected to boost Nigeria’s tourism sector, benefiting local economies and creating jobs ¹ ² ³.

The renewed focus on airport-based tourism support is a significant step towards making Nigeria a more attractive and accessible destination for international tourists. With improved infrastructure and services, Nigeria is poised to become a top tourist destination.
