“Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Among 18 Presidential Candidates” — INEC Releases Final List For 2027 Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates and their running mates for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, confirming 18 presidential tickets ahead of the January 16 poll.

The final list, signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, was released on Saturday, September 12, in line with INEC’s revised timetable for the 2027 general elections. The timetable had fixed September 12 for publication of the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates, with the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.

The list confirms President Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Vice-President Kashim Shettima as his running mate; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, with former Rivers State governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as running mate; and former Anambra State governor Peter Gregory Obi as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, with former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Other prominent names on the final list include former Cross River State governor Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Oyo State Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Sandy Ojang Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The final list contains 16 male and two female presidential candidates. The two women seeking the presidency are Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Nkem Esther Okereke of the National Rescue Movement (NRM). The emergence of the two as the remaining female presidential candidates had earlier followed the substitution of the Young Progressives Party’s former female nominee, Anita Zugwai-Chukwu.

INEC also listed 14 male and four female vice-presidential candidates. The four female running mates are Peace Egobia Ofordile of APP, Nafisat Usaku Abubakar of DLA, Hajja Bintu Konto of the Labour Party and Patience Ndidi Key of the YPP.

The final list represents a reduction from the 19 presidential candidates whose personal particulars were earlier published by INEC in August under Form EC9. The earlier publication included a New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, while the final list released on September 12 contains 18 presidential tickets.

The 18 presidential and vice-presidential tickets are:

  1. APC: Bola Tinubu (74) / Kashim Shettima (59)
  2. ADC: Atiku Abubakar (79) / Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (61)
  3. NDC: Peter Gregory Obi (65) / Musa Mohammed Rabiu Kwankwaso (69)
  4. LP: Sunday Chibuzo Okereke (43) / Hajja Bintu Konto (54)
  5. PDP: Sandy Ojang Onor (60) / Umaru Babangida (61)
  6. AA: Rufai Adekunle Omo-Aje / Shehu Hussaini
  7. ADP: Aliyu Abbas-Bin / Chinazam Ike
  8. APP: Kabiru Yusuf / Peace Egobia Ofordile
  9. AAC: Omoyele Sowore / Haruna Garba Magashi
  10. APM: Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde (58) / Musa Lawal Daura
  11. BP: Sunday Adenuga / Usman Turaki Mustapha
  12. DLA: Moses Olusoji Adebisi / Nafisat Usaku Abubakar
  13. NDP: Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori / Uchenna Anthony Chukwuemeka
  14. NRM: Nkem Esther Okereke / Nasir Muhammed Sulaiman
  15. PRP: Donald Duke / Kabiru Rabiu
  16. SDP: Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo / Usman Muhammed Bugaje
  17. YPP: Peter Ada Agada / Patience Ndidi Key
  18. ZLP: Daniel Daberechukwu Nwanyanwu / Hassan Khalid.

The publication formally settles the presidential candidate list following the period allowed for nominations, withdrawals and substitutions by political parties.

It also confirms several significant changes from the earlier candidate particulars published in August, including the YPP’s substitution of Anita Zugwai-Chukwu, leaving Okwori and Okereke as the only two female presidential candidates in the final race.

INEC also released the final lists of candidates contesting the Senate and House of Representatives elections, which will be conducted alongside the presidential election on January 16, 2027.

The presidential contest therefore formally features Tinubu seeking another term under the APC, Atiku running on the ADC platform, Obi carrying the NDC ticket and 15 other candidates seeking Nigeria’s highest elective office.
