The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, has announced the restoration of normal traffic flow on the critical Abuja-Lokoja Expressway following a major disruption caused by a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel.

The incident, which erupted over the weekend, reportedly stemmed from the smashing of a truck’s windscreen during an altercation, prompting truck drivers to blockade a section of the highway in protest.

The blockage led to severe gridlock, stranding motorists for hours and exacerbating hardships during the peak Christmas travel season. Many Nigerians heading south for family reunions and celebrations faced significant delays, with reports of travelers enduring prolonged waits amid rising frustrations.

Responding swiftly, Minister Umahi directed the immediate opening of completed sections of the ongoing expressway rehabilitation project and authorized the deployment of comprehensive measures to clear the corridor. This included close collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies.

The efforts paid off dramatically, with the Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, Engr. Patiko Isah, confirming that free traffic flow was restored around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

“The Field Headquarters, in collaboration with the FRSC and other security agencies, restored the free flow of traffic at about 2:00 a.m., today,” Engr. Isah stated.

This resolution comes against the backdrop of persistent challenges on the Abuja-Lokoja route, a vital artery linking the nation’s capital to southern regions.

Ongoing concrete pavement rehabilitation works, aimed at delivering durable infrastructure under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, have occasionally contributed to congestion.

However, the recent blockade highlighted tensions between heavy-duty vehicle operators and security forces, echoing similar past incidents.

Minister Umahi, known for his hands-on approach to infrastructure delivery, appealed directly to motorists: “Remain patient, orderly, and cautious, particularly during this peak holiday travel period.”

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safe and efficient road networks nationwide, assuring that such interventions reflect unwavering dedication to public welfare.

The Minister also extended warm festive greetings, wishing Nigerians a peaceful, safe, and joyous celebration.

Travelers and stakeholders have welcomed the development, with many expressing gratitude for the prompt action that averted a prolonged crisis during the yuletide rush. As Christmas approaches, the restored flow is expected to facilitate smoother journeys for millions returning home or visiting loved ones.

The Abuja-Lokoja Expressway, spanning key sections under rehabilitation, continues to be a focus of federal priority projects, with recent directives emphasizing completion timelines to minimize disruptions.
