NNPC Retail Unveils Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja

NNPC Retail Limited has commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja, introducing a technology-driven fuelling and mobility facility designed to provide customers with greater convenience, flexibility and access to a wider range of energy and lifestyle services.

According to a release issued by NNPC Ltd’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, the new facility, located on Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja, offers a 24-hour self-service fuelling experience, enabling customers to independently purchase fuel, select the exact volume required and make payments at any time of the day or night.

The Smart Station, developed by NNPC Retail, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), in partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), integrates conventional petroleum products with emerging energy solutions and other customer-focused services in a single location. The NIS provided the land for the development.

Speaking at the commissioning, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, described the project as another significant milestone in the transformation of NNPC Retail and its drive to respond to changing customer expectations.

“Today marks another important milestone in the evolution of NNPC Retail. The launch of this Smart Station reflects our commitment to innovation, convenience, operational efficiency, and most importantly, an exceptional customer experience,” Dagazau said.

NNPC Retail commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for its sustained cooperation, describing the partnership as an example of the institutional collaboration required to develop modern energy infrastructure and expand innovative services across the country.

The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, said the Smart Station was conceived in response to changing consumer preferences in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, particularly the growing demand for convenience, digital payment options, alternative energy solutions and value-added services.

“More than ever, we need to meet the needs of Nigerian consumers. They want quality products at the right price, prompt and friendly service, more value-added offerings and convenient payment options. They also want to be rewarded for their loyalty, have access to more energy solutions, including EV charging and CNG, and, particularly among younger customers, receive these services sustainably. That is precisely what this Smart Station represents,” Stokman said.

The facility comprises 16 Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pumps and two Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) pumps, with storage capacity of 180,000 litres of PMS and 5,000 litres of AGO.

Beyond conventional fuelling services, the station features an electric vehicle charging facility with an 86-point capacity, developed in partnership with Africa Motor Works. It also has an LPG dispensing facility, a modern lubricant service bay and a fully automated car wash.

The station has also been designed to accommodate the future installation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, reinforcing NNPC Retail’s strategy of incorporating multiple energy options into its retail network as Nigeria’s transportation and energy landscape evolves.

According to the statement, the facility is powered entirely by more than 200 kilowatt-hours of installed solar capacity, further underscoring its focus on sustainability and energy efficiency.

The development also includes space for quick-service restaurants, a coffee shop and a convenience store, transforming the facility from a conventional petrol station into an integrated mobility and lifestyle destination.

Stokman acknowledged the contributions of the NIS, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Africa Motor Works, technology partners, contractors and other stakeholders whose collaboration contributed to the successful delivery of the project.

He reaffirmed NNPC Retail’s commitment to expanding the Smart Station model across Nigeria, while strengthening partnerships with public and private sector institutions to develop a modern, technology-enabled retail network centred on customer needs.

In her remarks, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, represented by the Deputy Comptroller General, Finance and Accounts, Saidu Bashir Daura, congratulated NNPC on the commissioning of the facility.

She described the Smart Station as a model capable of encouraging increased investment in sustainable energy infrastructure and innovative transportation solutions, while highlighting the importance of partnerships between government institutions and private-sector operators in delivering modern infrastructure.

The Abuja facility represents a significant shift in the traditional retail-fuelling model, combining self-service technology, conventional and alternative energy solutions, mobility services and lifestyle offerings in a single destination.

NNPC Retail said the Smart Station initiative forms part of its broader effort to reposition its retail network to meet evolving consumer demands while supporting the transition towards cleaner, more diversified and technology-enabled energy solutions in Nigeria.
