Nigeria’s Gas Production Hits 7.59 BSCF In July As Flaring Falls To 7.16% — NUPRC

Nigeria recorded a significant boost in gas output in July 2025, with average daily production rising to 7.59 billion standard cubic feet, according to data released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

In a statement issued on its official social media platforms on Saturday, the commission disclosed that the country attained a dual milestone in July—higher production levels alongside a notable drop in gas flaring to 7.16 per cent.

“The simultaneous growth in output and decline in flaring underscores the commission’s drive to boost production while advancing its 2030 zero-flare commitment,” the NUPRC said.

The regulator highlighted that Nigeria’s gas sector has maintained consistent growth over the past three years, with the July 2025 daily average of 7.59 bscf representing an 8.58 per cent increase from the 6.99 bscfd recorded in 2024. The figure also reflects a 9.84 per cent rise compared to the 6.91 bscfd posted in 2023.

Despite the increase in production volumes, the commission confirmed that gas flaring continued to decline, dropping from 7.55 per cent in 2024 and 7.38 per cent in the corresponding period of 2023 to 7.16 per cent in July 2025. This, it said, reinforces its commitment to completely eliminate routine flaring by 2030.

To achieve this target, the commission disclosed that it has rolled out several initiatives, including the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme, a Decarbonisation and Sustainability Blueprint, and the promotion of Carbon Capture and Storage technologies. Additionally, sustainability practices are being embedded in project planning through the Upstream Petroleum Decarbonisation Template.

On domestic supply obligations, NUPRC reported that performance reached 72.5 per cent in July, slightly higher than the 71.8 per cent recorded in June. Earlier in the year, compliance stood at 72.2 per cent in January, 73.5 per cent in February, dipped to 70.8 per cent in March, before rising again to 73.7 per cent in April and 73.0 per cent in May.

Breakdown of production by contract type showed that Marginal Sole Risk operators (formerly Marginal Fields) contributed 63 per cent of total gas output in July. Production Sharing Contracts accounted for 24 per cent, Joint Venture operations contributed 10 per cent, while Sole Risk operators delivered the remaining 3 per cent.

Gas utilisation data further revealed that, as of July 2025, 35.88 per cent of total production was channelled to export markets, 27.82 per cent supplied to the domestic market, while 29.13 per cent was used for field and plant operations, including fuel, gas lifting, and reinjection to maintain reservoir pressure.

Gas-to-power supply also witnessed improvement, with average daily deliveries climbing by 3.48 per cent month-on-month—from 833.86 million standard cubic feet per day in June to 862.86 mmscf/d in July, the strongest level in three months.

From January to July 2025, gas-to-power supply averaged 780.23 mmscf/d in January, 849.37 mmscf/d in February, and 886.83 mmscf/d in March. Figures remained steady at 886.7 mmscf/d in April, before declining to 837.64 mmscf/d in May and 833.86 mmscf/d in June, with July marking a recovery at 862.86 mmscf/d.
