United Nigeria Airlines, owned by aviation mogul Obiora Okonkwo, has signed an agreement with U.S.-based Southwest Airlines to acquire six Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The deal, concluded at Southwest’s Dallas headquarters, is a significant step in the carrier’s plan to grow its fleet.

United Nigeria Airlines is putting itself in a position to increase service on domestic, regional, and international routes with the purchase of the 737-800s. The airline said the new aircraft will help increase capacity, lower operating costs, and support Nigeria’s broader aviation development goals.

United Nigeria expands with Boeing fleet

Okonkwo, United Nigeria Airlines’ Chairman, said the acquisition reflects the airline’s determination to build on its four years of operations. “This is a step further. Upgrading to the Boeing 737-800 allows us to expand profitably while offering more travel options to Nigerians and other African passengers,” he said.

The agreement goes beyond aircraft supply, creating a long-term technical partnership with Southwest Airlines that includes maintenance support and crew training. This move will help strengthen safety standards and operational efficiency, critical for passenger confidence.

The six aircraft are part of a wider plan. United Nigeria is already considering the purchase of four additional Boeing 737-800 Next Generation jets between early 2026 and early 2027. “With this upgrade, we can launch more direct flights to approved destinations, reduce layovers, improve the passenger experience, and strengthen our cargo operations while keeping fares competitive,” Okonkwo added.

Okonkwo builds airline into regional player

Founded in 2020, United Nigeria Airlines, is known for its reputation for dependability, safety, and customer care in the aviation sector. The airline connects key Nigerian cities and is moving into regional markets as it grows its network.

Okonkwo, a trained political scientist, also chairs companies in hospitality, security, and logistics. He is also the owner of The Dome Entertainment and Hospitality Group and he employs more than 1,000 people in his businesses, making him one of Nigeria's top private-sector employers.

The effort to expand will help Nigeria's economy by creating jobs and making trade linkages stronger. Okonkwo said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda, pointing to aviation’s role in promoting tourism, logistics, and regional commerce.
