Nigeria Unveils First Robotic Surgery Platform, Marking a Milestone in Healthcare Innovation

By Emmanuel Kwada

Nigeria has taken a significant leap forward in medical technology with the official unveiling of the country’s first robotic surgery platform. The groundbreaking initiative, led by the Nisa Medical Group in collaboration with Robomed Global and Nigerian diaspora experts, was inaugurated by Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

The platform, named ‘Toumai’ meaning ‘Hope of Life’ positions Nigeria as a pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery within West Africa.

The ceremony, attended by medical professionals, government officials, and international partners, showcased the advanced ‘MEDBOT’ system, a state-of-the-art robotic platform designed to enhance surgical precision and patient outcomes.

The ‘Toumai’ platform is the result of a strategic partnership between Nisa Medical Group and Robomed Global of the United States.

This collaboration extends beyond the introduction of the technology, encompassing training and certification programs for Nigerian and African surgeons, nurses, and biomedical engineers.

The initiative aims to elevate healthcare standards across the region by integrating robotic-assisted surgeries and improving safety in operating theaters.

Dr. Iyore James, Chief Medical Officer of Robomed, highlighted the mission’s dual focus: introducing cutting-edge technology while building a skilled local workforce to world-class standards.

Mrs. Efosa Eluma, Chief Operations Officer, reiterated the organization’s commitment to operational excellence and establishing a sustainable pathway for robotic surgery throughout West Africa.

During the unveiling, Minister Pate commended Dr. Wada and the Nisa Medical Group team for their pioneering efforts. He noted that the robotic surgery platform offers higher precision, smaller incisions, and quicker patient recovery times compared to traditional methods.

Pate linked the development to broader healthcare reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which prioritize expanding access to quality care nationwide.

“The introduction of this platform is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of its people,” Pate said. “It aligns with our vision to transform healthcare delivery and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.”

The adoption of robotic surgery aligns with global trends, as outlined in recent literature, where the technology has revolutionized fields such as urology, gynecology, and general surgery.

Benefits include improved depth perception through 3D imaging, enhanced range of motion, and reduced postoperative complications. However, experts acknowledge challenges such as the high costs of equipment and maintenance, which Nigeria aims to address through strategic partnerships and local training initiatives.

As the first of its kind in West Africa, the ‘Toumai’ platform sets a precedent for medical innovation in the region. Plans are underway to expand its use and train additional healthcare professionals, ensuring that the benefits of this technology reach underserved communities.
