MOFI Launches RAMCO to Safeguard Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Assets

The Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) has launched the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO), a new institutional vehicle designed to ensure the long-term sustainability, value preservation and commercial viability of Nigeria’s renewable energy investments.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MOFI, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, announced the development, describing the launch as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to move beyond the construction of renewable energy projects towards effective management and preservation of the assets created.

Takang said the establishment of RAMCO would provide an institutional framework for the continuous monitoring, maintenance, reinvestment and renewal of renewable energy assets across the country.

According to him, Nigeria must ensure that investments made in creating public assets translate into sustained value over their entire lifecycle.

“It was a great delight to finally launch the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO),” Takang said.

He stressed that bringing an asset into existence should not be regarded as the end of the investment process, but rather the beginning of a long-term responsibility to protect, maintain and optimise its value.

“As I have often repeated, Nigeria has an obligation to optimise the value of its assets after investing in their creation. Bringing assets to being is not the end, but the beginning. And this is why RAMCO now exists,” he said.

The new company is expected to strengthen the institutional architecture for managing renewable energy infrastructure while helping to ensure that such assets remain operational, productive and commercially sustainable over the long term.

A key feature of RAMCO is its tripartite institutional model involving the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), MOFI and the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp).

Under the arrangement, REA will provide technical expertise and programme insights, drawing on its experience in implementing rural and renewable electrification initiatives.

MOFI, on its part, will provide strategic asset management and ownership oversight, ensuring that the assets are properly managed and that their value is preserved and enhanced.

InfraCorp will contribute its expertise in project bankability and help mobilise long-term private-sector capital required to support the development, expansion and sustainability of renewable energy infrastructure.

The collaboration is expected to create a stronger link between public investment, professional asset management and private-sector financing, thereby improving the prospects of renewable energy projects beyond their initial construction phase.

Takang also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his vision and commitment to accelerating renewable energy development in Nigeria.

He said the President’s drive was already producing results, particularly through initiatives aimed at expanding access to reliable and sustainable electricity while encouraging greater investment in the renewable energy sector.

The MOFI chief executive also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministers of Finance, Power, Education and Health, as well as the Director-General of the Budget Office, for their oversight and commitment to the initiative.

He further commended the Chairman of the REA Board, Ayodele Fayose, and other board chairmen for their support and guidance throughout the process leading to the establishment of RAMCO.

Takang expressed appreciation to the management and teams at REA and InfraCorp for what he described as “uncommon initiative and strategic collaboration” in bringing the project to fruition.

He also acknowledged stakeholders from the private and third sectors for their support towards the initiative.

The establishment of RAMCO comes as Nigeria continues to seek new approaches to addressing its electrity supply challenges and expanding renewable energy capacity, particularly in underserved and off-grid communities.

For MOFI, the initiative represents a broader asset-management philosophy in which government investments are expected to be actively managed after project completion rather than left to deteriorate or lose commercial value.

Through RAMCO, the government is positioning renewable energy assets as long-term economic infrastructure requiring continuous investment, professional oversight and structured maintenance.

The company could therefore play an important role in ensuring that renewable energy projects deliver sustained economic and social returns while creating opportunities for additional private capital to participate in Nigeria’s energy transition.

The launch also reinforces the growing importance of collaboration among government institutions, development agencies and private investors in financing and managing the infrastructure required to support Nigeria’s long-term energy and industrial development objectives.
