Minority queries Transport Minister over National Airline plans

The government’s plan to re-establish a national airline and revamp the transport sector has come under scrutiny in Parliament, with the Minority demanding full disclosure of how private investors are being engaged.

Appearing before Parliament on Thursday, October 30, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, outlined progress made toward launching the new national carrier.

He confirmed that several investment proposals have been received from both local and international partners, marking an important step toward restoring Ghana’s aviation footprint.

However, he declined to reveal details about the proposals or the companies involved, explaining that the negotiations were still ongoing and commercially sensitive.

His refusal triggered criticism from Minority MPs, who questioned the transparency of the process. Members of the Transport Committee argued that Parliament must be informed about when the Ministry opened the bid process and the criteria used for evaluating proposals.

They warned that keeping such details undisclosed could undermine public confidence and hinder parliamentary oversight.

“We are not against reviving the national airline,” one Minority MP stated. “But the process must be transparent and open so that Ghanaians can trust that the national interest is being protected.”

The Minister also highlighted plans to upgrade public transport infrastructure, including acquiring new buses for Metro Mass Transit (MMT). The initiative aims to improve safety, expand routes, and modernise the fleet.

However, the Minority has hinted that it will continue pushing for accountability in all transport-related projects, insisting that transparency should be at the heart of every government procurement.
