Microsoft is bringing artificial intelligence to your photo library with a new Photos app update on Windows 11. The feature, currently rolling out to Windows 11 Insiders on Copilot+ PCs, uses AI to automatically categorize clutter like screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and handwritten notes into their own folders.

AI-Powered Photo Organization

The updated Photos app scans your image library and sorts photos into categories based on visual content. This means that whether it’s a screenshot of your desktop, a picture of a handwritten note, or even a passport photo in another language, the app can recognize and file it automatically.

Once the app organizes your images, the newly created folders will appear under the Categories section on the left navigation bar. Microsoft says the AI feature works even if the text in the image is not in English, making it useful for users across different regions.

What the Feature Can Detect

Right now, the Photos app can identify and organize:

  • Screenshots
  • Receipts
  • Identity documents (like passports or driver’s licenses)
  • Handwritten notes

Microsoft has not yet enabled custom categories, but future updates may let users define their own folders, such as “pets,” “vacations,” or “events.”

For many Windows users, photo libraries are filled with clutter, random screenshots, saved receipts, and ID scans. This AI-powered update makes it easier to keep important files in order without having to manually sort through thousands of images.
