When Kenya’s history is written, it cannot fail to mention Daniel Arap Moi, the longest-serving President in the country.

Even though his prominence was mostly in politics, Moi was also an established businessman, a legacy that continues within his family even long after his death.

During his time as Kenya’s President, Moi established several businesses in various sectors, including education, large-scale agriculture, and hospitality.

After his passing, his kin still run a majority of the business assets, with the family’s net worth estimated at approximately Ksh 300 billion.

In this segment, Times Digital Kenya takes a look at some of the holdings that the family has in the education, hospitality, as well as agriculture sectors.

Schools

The Moi family is well known for heavy investment in educational facilities. Some of the schools either owned or affiliated with the family include:

  • Kabarak High School – Established in 1979, it has long been one of Kenya’s top-performing national-level schools.
  • Kabarak University – Sharing land with Kabarak High School, Kabarak University is based on a Christian foundation and was founded in 2000. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in various fields, including Medicine & Health Sciences, Business & Economics, Law, and Pharmacy.
  • Sacho High School – Founded in 1982, Sacho High School is located near the Kipngochoch Forest. For decades, it has been a centre of excellence in Baringo.

  • Moi Educational Centre – Located in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, the Moi Educational Centre was founded in 1981.
  • Sunshine National School – Another school associated with the Moi family, it was established in 1995. Located opposite Wilson Airport along Lang’ata Road, Sunshine National School offers unique subjects such as Aviation Technology, Music, and French.

Hotels

The Moi family also has heavy investment in the hospitality industry. Through the Sovereign Group, they own several high-end hotels, which include:

The Lord Erroll, Merica Hotel Nakuru, Lake Bogoria Spa Resort, and Crater Lake Tented Camp and Game Sanctuary.

Agricultural Holdings and farms

In addition to schools and hotels, the Moi family has built one of Kenya’s largest agricultural empires. Just like their hotels, the family manages its holdings through several companies, most notably the Sovereign Group.

Among their major agricultural investments are the 2,333-acre Kiptagich Tea Estate and Sian Flowers, which operates four farms in Kitengela, Njoro, and two in Eldoret.

That’s not all. The Moi family owns Chemusian Farm, a tea estate with over 600 acres of tea bushes, and a dairy division with nearly 1,000 animals. Sasini Group of Farms is another part of their vast holdings in the agricultural sector.

Specialized agricultural ventures include Kabarak Farm, Maasai Ostrich Resort, and Kenya Bixa Limited.

On top of all that, the Moi family also owns an expansive 17,000-acre ranch in Samburu as well as a 2,300-acre home farm in Nakuru.
