Louisiana Sheriff Indicted After Jailbreak of 10 Inmates in New Orleans

A grand jury has indicted Susan Hutson, the sheriff of Orleans Parish in New Orleans, following a high-profile jailbreak in which 10 inmates escaped from a local jail facility.

According to reports, the incident triggered a month-long manhunt before all the escapees were eventually recaptured. While Hutson is not accused of directly assisting the inmates in their escape, authorities say the incident occurred under her watch due to serious management failures.

Liz Murrill stated that a state investigation found that poor oversight and failure to follow basic procedures contributed significantly to the escape.

The 30-count indictment issued by the grand jury includes charges of malfeasance, obstruction of justice, and falsifying public records.

In a statement, Murrill said: “While Sheriff Hutson did not personally open the doors of the jail for the escapees, her refusal to comply with basic legal requirements and to take even minimal precautions in the discharge of her duties directly contributed to and enabled the escape.”

During a farewell address on Tuesday, Hutson acknowledged the challenges her office faced and described the jailbreak as a major test. She said:
“tested us to the limit.”

She further added that her office “responded with professionalism, urgency, and resilience, and we came out stronger because of it.”

Court documents reveal that Hutson’s bond has been set at $300,000. She has also been ordered to surrender her passport and remain within the state while the case proceeds.

In addition, Bianka Brown, the chief financial officer of the sheriff’s office, has been indicted on 20 similar charges. She has not responded to requests for comment.

Details from the investigation revealed that the inmates escaped by crawling through a hole behind a toilet before scaling a barbed wire fence. They reportedly left behind graffiti that read “To Easy LoL.” Authorities also discovered that the jail staff did not notice the inmates were missing until more than seven hours later.

The incident drew sharp criticism from state officials and local leaders, who accused Hutson of poor management and failing to promptly notify law enforcement agencies.

Hutson initially suggested that political opponents may have been behind the jailbreak, though no evidence was provided to support the claim. She also pointed to faulty door locks as a contributing factor and stated that she had previously sought funding to address infrastructure issues within the facility.
