A Lagos High Court has issued an interim order restraining the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the management of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, and other parties from taking further steps in the ongoing leadership tussle within the institution’s SSANU chapter.

Justice Ismaila Ijelu gave the order in Suit No. YSD/6531MJR/2025, filed by Gbenga Adenaiya and six others against Yusuf Ademola Rasaq, UNILAG, and six additional respondents.

The case stems from a leadership crisis between rival factions seeking control of the UNILAG branch of SSANU.

The judge’s decision followed the consideration of an ex parte application supported by affidavits, exhibits, and oral submissions by the claimants’ counsel, Chief Ajose Abẹjoye, assisted by Olúwaṣeun Ikumelo.

After reviewing the arguments, Justice Ijelu granted leave for the motion to be heard during the court’s vacation and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo, warning against any action that could undermine the court’s authority.

The court directed that the planned SSANU election at UNILAG be suspended until the substantive motion is determined.

Justice Ijelu noted that the order was necessary to prevent any party from taking steps that could prejudice the outcome of the suit or render the court’s eventual ruling ineffective.

The case was adjourned to October 24, 2025, for hearing of the Motion on Notice.
