Chelsea are no longer the frontrunners in the race to sign Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

According to The Evening Standard, Arsenal are leading the chase to sign Ivan Toney ahead of the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old striker will be available again next month after serving his suspension, and he’s a popular name after scoring 20 Premier League goals in Brentford colours last season.

Ivan Toney race takes twist
The Evening Standard has claimed today that Arsenal lead the way to sign Brentford’s frontman, despite rival interest from both Chelsea and Tottenham.

It is explained that title chasers Arsenal have emerged as the centre-forward’s preferred option.

The report says that Chelsea had been viewed as the most likely destination for the England frontman, who’s going to cost £60million up front and as much as £80million in total.

However, the poor form of Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season has cost them leverage in this transfer race. Also, the Blues need to make a number of sales before they can go and spend big in January due to financial reasons.

Finally, Spurs are considered outsiders because they can’t meet the Brentford asking price.

Chelsea form has cost them
We did see the Blues reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals by beating Newcastle United on penalties last night, so there’s life left in this season yet.

However, there’s no hiding from the fact that the league form has been atrocious. Chelsea sit 10th in the league table with only 22 points from 17 games. We’ll add that there’s a mini run of fixture left in 2023 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Luton Town to try climb the division.

We feel like Brentford’s Toney would be a game-changer at Stamford Bridge as a quality No 9. Unfortunately, it sounds like the chances of getting him are diminishing.

Shaun Wright-Phillips told The Sport Review last month that Toney would be a “tremendous” addition for Chelsea or Arsenal. The noise in the media is that the latter are in pole position at this moment in time.
