Gerrard slams Liverpool’s 4–1 loss to PSV

Steven Gerrard has labelled Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to PSV at Anfield in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League fixture as unacceptable.

The Reds continued their poor run of form with the shocking home loss, coming just days after a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Before the international break, they were also beaten 3-0 by Manchester City—meaning Liverpool have now conceded three or more goals in three straight games across all competitions, a slump they last experienced in September 1992.

During that period, Liverpool fell 4-2 to Aston Villa, drew 4-4 with Chesterfield in the League Cup, and then lost to Wimbledon at Anfield when league action resumed.

“No, it’s not [acceptable],” Gerrard said. “They’re conceding too many goals, they’re wide open, they’re vulnerable and unstable. Anfield tells a story; the seats are empty.

“PSV were excellent, and we were comfortable here tonight, deserving the victory. Liverpool’s problems become deeper, pressure intensifies even more, and there needs to be soul-searching for sure.”

Gerrard also questioned the defensive reshuffle that ended the match for Liverpool. Arne Slot replaced Ibrahima Konate with Federico Chiesa shortly after PSV scored their third goal, but the change failed to spark any response as the Reds conceded a fourth in added time.

Konate has now been withdrawn early in consecutive games, after being substituted ten minutes into the second half against Nottingham Forest—a match in which Hugo Ekitike replaced him before Liverpool conceded again.

“The substitution of [Ibrahima] Konate was huge, that sends a story,” Gerrard added. “You look at the back four that you finish with: Curtis Jones, [Ryan] Gravenberch, [Virgil] van Dijk and [Milos] Kerkez. That’s not a Liverpool back four, never will be.”
