Leicester City may be top of the English Championship and very much in line for a prompt return to the Premier League, but their finances may see them docked points that will affect their chances of getting back to the top league.

The club of Super Eagles stars Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi have suffered more financial losses than they are allowed to in the English Championship.

Under EFL rules, clubs cannot make more than €97.14 million in losses over a three-year period. In the Premier League the loss limit is more than 20 million euros more.

Leicester should have submitted a business plan to show how it planned to meet spending limits, according to the Championship governing body.

“Leicester City is responsible for meeting its obligations under the Rules, which will be assessed together with the entries from all other clubs in accordance with the competition’s established processes,” the EFL said in a statement.Leicester would have lost too much in the past year for a Championship club.

However, the club claim that the relevant financial rules did not apply because they played in the Premier League last season.

If Leicester are actually punished for breaking the rules, a possible championship for The Foxes is in serious danger. Point deductions and financial sanctions are looming.

Leicester are currently at the top of England’s second-tier league. The lead over closest rivals Ipswich Town is only three points.
