Right now, WhatsApp allows you to protect your end-to-end encrypted chat backups in two ways – either by setting a password or by using a special 64-digit encryption key – something many have found confusing.

WhatsApp plans to make the process easier to secure your chats with passkey-enabled encryption. Meaning, you can now use your phone’s fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to end-to-end encrypt your chat backups.

Since the new security feature lets you use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to encrypt your chat backs, you won’t have to memorize a password or 64-digit encryption key. The feature is just made available and will roll out gradually over the coming weeks and months.

At the time of writing, the new Passkeys feature isn’t available on my WhatsApp app. However, lots of users have been able to use it.

Anyways, if your WhatsApp app is updated, here’s how you can secure your messages using fingerprint or Face ID instead of long passwords or 64-digit keys.

  • Open the Google Play Store and update the WhatsApp app.
  • Once updated, launch the app and tap the three dots in the right corner.
  • On the WhatsApp menu, select Settings.
  • Tap on the Chats.
  • On the Chats screen, scroll down and tap Chat Backup.
  • Next, tap on End-to-end encrypted backup.
  • Enable the feature and select Passkeys.
  • Now select your preferred option.

This will enable passkey security for your end-to-end encrypted chat backups.

Please note that WhatsApp is releasing this feature gradually, so it may take a week or two before it becomes available to everyone around the world.
