Headies Awards: Why Canada Was Chosen For 18th Edition – Organisers

The organisers of the Headies Awards have confirmed that the next edition of the ceremony will once again be held outside Nigeria, with Canada announced as the host country for the 18th edition.

The award show previously moved out of Nigeria in 2022 for its 15th edition, which took place in Atlanta, before returning to Lagos for the 17th edition in 2025.

Speaking on Monday at “The Big Announcement” event held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun said the decision to stage the 18th edition in Toronto was driven largely by cost considerations.

He added that although the main event will be held in Canada, there will also be a simultaneous watch party in Lagos, allowing Nigerian audiences to engage with the ceremony and view parts of the awards live from home.

Animashaun said, “Someone said Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again, he said it doesn’t make sense. Tell me what makes sense. Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore?

“So how do we fund it? We will have a watch Party in Lagos.”
