He Took a Loan for Our Wedding And Now Wants Me To Be The Breadwinner

We got married just last week after dating for a year. I didn’t force my husband to marry me. He was the one who proposed marriage after six months of dating because, according to him, he had come of age and wanted to check marriage off his list.

We went through a traditional marriage and successfully went through the white wedding. He wasn’t the only one who paid the bills for the wedding. I did my best as a wife to help him where he needed help.

On our honeymoon, he told me, “I took a loan for the wedding. Don’t worry, it’s a safe loan, but what it means is that you’ll have to take up the financial role for a while.”

I was surprised because our wedding wasn’t elaborate. It’s something you wouldn’t call big. We didn’t even have a reception. We shared snacks and drinks right in the church. And I contributed too, so what loan was he talking about? When I asked, he said he took GHC20,000 to support his savings to be able to do the wedding.

I swear the wedding we did couldn’t cost GHC20,000 from him. I contributed a lot, so what did he do with that amount?

I’ve been angry since the honeymoon. It’s not about the loan alone but the fact that he told me on a day we should be happy and also the fact that he hid it from me. I told him I wasn’t going to take up any financial role because I didn’t know anything about the loan, and also I wasn’t sure he spent it on our wedding.

We are only one week into this marital journey, and we are already fighting. We haven’t talked for days except through questions and answers. I’m so angry I want to leave this house and go where there is no loan hanging over my head. I’m asking, will it be too harsh if I decide not to contribute a penny into this house since I have nothing to do with the loan?
