What We Tested…

  • Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40, $40

    • Tested in all four colors (Sunrise, Untinted, Golden Hour, Sunset)

How We Tested…

Four coworkers wore Supergoop!’s Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 for three to four weeks, with and without makeup.

Ali’s Results Testing Sunrise

  • I feel divided over this sunscreen. I like it for many reasons, but I do find that it dries me out. The whipped texture is soft and easy to spread, and it does provide a good level of coverage. On days where I wanted to be makeup-free, this was a great level of coverage when running errands or meeting a friend for a casual lunch.

  • This also layered well underneath makeup — I had no issue, minus a slight dryness by the end of the day. I will qualify that my office AC dries me out as well, so I don’t want to solely blame the mattifying effect of this sunscreen.

  • My skin is on the drier side, especially on my nose and within the crease of my chin, so I can’t say I would choose this sunscreen over something that hydrates more and creates a dewy effect. It really depends on your skin type. Like Caroline below, this sunscreen was very gentle on my skin and never made me break out. I really appreciated that.

  • For $40, the size of this sunscreen feels small. You get 1.5 fluid ounces. I haven’t run out yet, but when the package came, I remember being surprised by how tiny the bottle was.

Caroline’s Results Testing Untinted

  • Unfortunately, this particular product wasn’t for me. My skin just doesn’t respond well to mattifying products. I have combination/normal skin, but it errs on the dry side, so most mattifying formulas — including this one — feel too heavy on my skin. The texture itself is a little thicker than usual, but it’s the completely dry-to-the-touch finish that I didn’t love. Overall I’m just not the target audience for this formulation, but I do think it would work very well on oily skin types.

  • On the bright side, my skin is sensitive to a lot of SPFs and this one didn’t make me break out or feel itchy. That’s a major bonus. I do think this is a thoughtfully formulated product that still feels much more elegant on my skin than other SPFs, so I’m definitely interested in trying a different formula that would better suit my skin type and preferences.

Kamini’s Results Testing Sunrise + Golden Hour

  • This is as close to one-and-done as it gets. I used it every day for three weeks — both on its own and underneath makeup — and it fit seamlessly into my routine. It spreads easily and doesn’t require much thought. One note: skip the brush. Fingers or a sponge will give you a better, more even finish.

  • The texture is silky and smooth, it almost feels more like a primer than a traditional sunscreen. It dries down to a true matte finish (which I love) without feeling heavy, greasy, or sticky. No pilling, no separation, and no midday oil slick.

  • The tint and shade range is where it lost me. I tried Sunrise and Golden Hour, and neither shade was for me. Sunrise was too light and gave a slight cast, while Golden Hour was too deep for me to wear on its own. It also didn’t oxidize or adjust throughout the day, so what you see is what you get. If your shade matches, great. If not, it’s a no.

  • It held up well throughout the day — no greasiness, no breakdown. My skin felt protected (which I expect from Supergoop!), and most importantly, I had zero irritation or breakouts — a big win for my sensitive, eczema-prone skin.

  • To me, the biggest downside is price. At this price point, daily use, and especially reapplication in the summer, adds up fast. I didn’t run out during my testing period, but it’s easy to see how quickly you could. That said, if they have your shade, I think it’s worth it — especially if you want a matte, sensitive-skin-friendly SPF that can double as your base.

Sarai’s Results Testing Sunset

  • I put Supergoop’s Mineral Mattescreen in Sunset to the test for a couple of weeks, and for the most part, it does what it says it will. It goes on smoothly, feels soft, and definitely delivers that mattifying, blurring effect.

  • One note: It left my skin looking a little ashy. There wasn’t a white cast (for deeper skin tones this is a big plus), but I wouldn’t reach for this as a standalone layer. It works as a primer and layers easily underneath makeup. I was impressed with how good (and not greasy) my skin looked. Long story short, not my everyday sunscreen on its own, but I’ll keep it in rotation as a primer. And yes, I’d buy it again.

The Fine Details…

  • Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40, $40

  • Doubles as a makeup-gripping primer, helps filter blue light, non-comedogenic

  • Mattescreen was created as a daily sunscreen option for those with normal to oily skin, and recommended even for sensitive skin
