Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has officially announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

The declaration was made during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday, where Malami expressed confidence in broad-based support across the state.

“INEC guidelines do not allow us to begin mobilisation yet, but when the time comes, you will see that we have the support of the people of Kebbi State,” Malami said. “I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win because we have people who believe in us.”

Malami criticised the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening economic hardship in northern Nigeria. He highlighted insecurity, which has forced many farmers off their lands, and the closure of rice mills that had operated for decades, attributing the shutdowns to policies favouring foreign companies.

“The challenges we face today—rampant insecurity, stalled agriculture, and neglect—demand urgent attention,” he said, stressing that his ambition is driven by a commitment to “salvage Kebbi State, restore security, rebuild agriculture, and protect the welfare of residents.”

The former AGF, who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier this year, explained that his decision followed wide consultations and personal reflection. He clarified that the move is motivated by concern for the welfare of Kebbi residents, not personal gain or political vendetta.

Malami’s entry sets the stage for a high-profile governorship contest in Kebbi State in 2027, with the candidate pledging to prioritise security, agricultural revitalisation, and the interests of the people above partisan politics.
