Five atmospheric UK walks that are perfect at this time of year - from frosted fields to moody coastal paths

As Britons take time to wind down and relax over the Christmas week, it is the perfect opportunity to step outside and enjoy a peaceful winter walk.

From frost-dusted countryside to crisp coastal paths, five incredible routes will help you discover all the UK has to offer.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, landscape photographer Robin Dodd shared his expertise with five top recommendations for walking at this time of year, starting with Stac Pollaidh in Scotland.

Routes in England and Wales also made his list, all of different lengths, catering to various abilities.

Stac Pollaidh, Scotland

Robin said: "This is a short but dramatic winter walk (approx. 2.8km to 4.5km) with sweeping views over Assynt’s lochs and peaks, taking three hours.

"The lower circular loop is manageable in winter; the summit ridge requires care and winter hill experience in icy conditions. However, it is very easy to detour on the circular route and miss out the steep climb in ice and snow. It is perfect for atmospheric, rugged winter landscape photography."

Glen Affric Circular Walk, Highlands

"This is a longer 11-mile circuit through ancient pine forest, lochs and mountain views. There are plenty of much shorter routes nearby, but this is a great full day out," he added.

"It is quiet, peaceful and spectacular in winter with snow-dusted woodland. This is one of the few remaining ancient woodlands that is still green, with the iconic Caledonian pines as its main feature. It is great for moody woodland and reflective water encased within a snow-covered mountain amphitheatre."

Henley River Walk via The Flower Pot Pub, Oxfordshire/Berkshire

The expert said: "It's a relaxed Thames Path walk (approx. 6.5 miles) ideal for a crisp winter half-day. It combines riverside scenery with a cosy fire and lunch stop at The Flower Pot, with its great fireplace to warm you up.

"Good for a tranquil river without summer crowds, rowers and river life, along with herds of white deer along the way."

Llanthony Priory Walk, South Wales

"This is a gentle 4.5-mile circular around the medieval priory and valley floor. There is a pub for food and drink, but check which days it is open. There is an optional ridge extension for bigger winter views over the Vale of Ewyas.

"The atmospheric ruins, frosted fields and hills make for striking seasonal photos. You'll find wild ponies on top to greet you, mist in the valley and frost on the ground."

The Ranges, Kimmeridge – Dorset Coast

Robin explained: "A rugged nine-mile coastal loop with dramatic winter sea cliffs and open views with a detour to the deserted/evacuated village, which takes you back to England in 1940.

"It is accessible only when the military range is open, from December 21 to January 5, over Christmas. Ideal for stark, moody coastal walks in winter light."
